Christal hurls Parsippany to Hub Lakes crown - August 11, 2002 |
|
by Dennis Wilson - Suburban Life |
| Lake Parsippany snapped a drought of more than 20 years by defeating Intervale
and all-Parsippany championship final of the Hub Lakes Men's Softball season by a score of 6-0. Mark Christal hurled
a two-hit shutout, walking two and fanning two in a route-going performance over seven innings at Smith Field on
Sunday morning. Seeded No. 1, Lake Parsippany pushed a pair of runs across the plate in the bottom of the first as Billy Ahearn picked up an RBI when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Greg Marone followed with a walk for another RBI. With the score remaining 2-0 into the fifth inning, Marone turned in the defensive gem of the game from his shortstop position, diving to spear a line drive for the first out of the inning. The next Intervale batter singled but Marone's outstanding play nullified any comeback. "Greg's diving catch was the turning point of the game," said Parsippany's Mike Fazzio. "It stopped an Intervale rally before it started and sparked our offense later in the inning." Parsippany exploded with four runs to ice the verdict in the bottom of the fifth. Pete Ciccaglione and Bob Adamo led off with back-to-back singles. Jim D'Allesandro picked up an RBI on a sacrifice fly and Crystal aided his cause with an RBI single. Rookie backstop Paul Suarez legged out a three-bagger, chasing Crystal across the plate with the third run of the inning. Ron Giblisco, who went 2 for 2, drilled an RBI single that plated Suarez with the final tally of the game. "Our success was based on the quality depth of our roster," said Fazzio who posted a 5-1 record during the season but missed a playoff game when he was out-of-town. "Whenever one of our players was absent because of business or vacation, we were able to fill the spot with a quality player and remained highly competitive throughout the regular season and playoffs." D'Allesandro played right field in the championship game as Tommy Ahearn was ill and Steve Randolph filled in for Tony Baxter at first base as Baxter was on a business trip. Pat Lynch anchored second base, Stan Pilipe roamed in left field while Dave Gerardi, Sr., Dave Gerardi, Jr. and Dan O'Connor were other valuable members of Lake Parsippany's first championship squad in more than two decades. In the consolation third place game played at Gardner Field in Denville on Sunday, defending champion Indian Lake routed Rock Ridge 17-7 as Randy Reeves picked up the win, aided by a 3 for 3 day at the plate by Dan Cacella. |

Indian cruises to Hub Lakes women's crown - August 7, 2002 |
|
by Bob Decker - The Citizen of Morris County |
| Jim McCauley says he likes the Indian Lake softball team that played in
the playoffs a lot better than the Indian Lake softball team that played in the regular season. Easy to see why Ð the team he didn't like was 2-3 and finished in fourth-place in the Hub Lakes Woman's Softball League's regular season while the team he did like was 2-0 and won the post-season playoff championship last Wednesday with a 9-2 victory over Rock Ridge Lake, which had tied for the regular-season title with White Meadow Lake. Showing that Indian Lake doesn't play favorites, McCauley's team had knocked off White Meadow Lake, 7-2, in the semifinals the week before. "Basically, the girls finally started to play the way I always knew they could ... you could say we didn't wake up until the end of the season," McCauley was saying the other day from his home. "They hit the ball well and the defense came around Ð our defense played the best it has played all season. "Holding the two top-seeded teams to just two runs each is a great accomplishment." Against White Meadow Lake, McCauley points out, six of the seven runs Indian Lake scored came with two outs. Indian Lake didn't wait that long to score against Rock Ridge, building a 4-0 lead in its first at-bat. Amanda Schreiner hit a one-out single to get it going and Heather Palmer and Betsy Rynkiewicz follwed with singles to load the bases. Janet Savite drove in two runs with a single and Tracy Heddone and Eileen Martinson followed with RBI singles to give Indian Lake a lead it never lost. Indian Lake made it 7-0 in the fourth when Cheryl McCauley, Donna Hennessey and Schreiner each drove in single runs with singles and the final two Indian runs came home in the fifth on an RBI groundout by winning pitcher Patty Colucci and an RBI single by Mary Ann Fischer. Rock Ridge scored its runs on an RBI single by losing pitcher Fran McEnteer in the fifth inning and an RBI single by Barb Maday in the seventh. Fonda Smith and Michelle VanWinkle both went 2-for-3. For Colucci, her six-hit, three-strikeout victory was was her second straight impressive playoff pitching performance. "She was at her best for the two playoff games, that's for sure," McCauley says. "Her bases-loaded strikeout in the fifth inning kept them from having a big inning ... she was really sharp." For McCauley, who is assisted by Brett Vanderyajt and Dirk Schoneveld, the game marked the third straight season Indian Lake has been in the playoff championship game. "We went down to the last inning before losing to White Meadow, 7-5, last year," McCauley says. "This result is much better than last year's." Rock Ridge manager Bob Moran was quick to tip his hat to the Indian Lake club for its fine play in the championship game. "They put it all together Ð hitting, pitching and defense," Moran says. "They jumped on us in the first inning and we never did recover. "We didn't hit, that was the main problem. We had been hitting all year and just picked a bad game for out bats to go silent. But you have to give a lot of credit to their pitcher, too." Moran's team finished with a 6-2 overall record with Smith (12-for-17 in her last four games) and Michelle Tompkins (11-for-16 in her last four games) leading the offense. "Barb DeLuna played a great shortstop and Fran pitched well for us all season, too." |

Rainbow upsets White Meadow |
| Rainbow Lakes pulled off the upset of the Hub Lakes Women's Softball season
by defeating White Meadow Lake 13 to 7. The loss deprived White Meadow Lake of sole possession of first place,
enabling Rock Ridge Lake to gain a share of the regular season title with both teams finishing 4-1. Cindy Carney went the route to pick up the win aided at the plate by Karen Mikorski and Pam Niglio, both of whom went 4 for 4 while teammate Jesanne Rochsteiner crossed the plate four times. Rock Ridge routed Cedar Lake 22-9 to earn a share of the title. Rock Ridge coach Bob Moran shuffled his lineup and the squad responded in a big way. Fonda Smith, hitting leadoff, went 5 for 5, scoring four times and driving in a pair of runs to key the Ridgers to their fourth "W" of the season. Cindy Carolan struck a big blow when she legged out a three-bagger with the bases loaded and Michele Thompkins drive in three runs. Indian Lakes blanked Mountain Lakes 15-0 to finish at 2-3 and secure the No. 4 slot in the playoffs on criteria over Rainbow Lakes which also finished with a 2-3 mark. White Meadow Lake was seeded No. 1 and hosts Indian Lake while second-seeded Rock Ridge will host No. 3 Cedar Lake in a rematch of last week's game as the playoffs begin on Wednesday. |
