8 Eight records set in Hub Lakes Swimming championships |

| Eight new meet marks were established at the 2001 Hub Lakes Swimming Championships
contested at Mountain Lakes on Saturday and Sunday as the host Lakers successfully defended their team title. Charlie Wang of Mountain Lakes, who broke two records, and Ashley Fedor of Indian Lake, who established one new standard, were the named the Bob'O'Connell Award Winners. Tim & Sandy Vogel of Cedar Lake were honored with the Dave LaMothe Award that is presented by Lake Parsippany each year for outstanding contributions to the Hub Lakes swimming program. In basically a mirror-image finish in the team standings from one year ago, the top seven teams finished in the exact same order with only Lake Estling and Rainbow Lake swapping positions from 2000. Wang easily broke the 9 & 10-year old 50-meter freestyle mark of 36.19 seconds set by Tucker Gniewek of Mountain Lakes when he touched the finish wall in 33.83 seconds. His second record came in the 50-meter backstroke in which he erased the old mark of 42.29 that was also set by Gniewek when he was clocked in 36.09 seconds. Fedor set a new standard of 1:07.17 in the 13 to 17 girls 100-meter freestyle, erasing the existing mark of 1:11.90 set by Melanie Hobart of Mountain Lakes. Another Mountain Lakes swimmer, Dan Pulitano, raced to a new record of 41.78 seconds in the 9 & 10-year old boys 50-meter breaststroke, breaking the old mark of 52.57 seconds set last year by his teammate Mike Smigelski who finished second with a time of 48.86 seconds. Caroline Dewing was responsible for the fifth new record set by a Mountain Lakes swimmer when her winning time of 43.48 seconds in the 9 & 10-year old girls 50-meter breastsroke erased the old mark of 48.57 seconds. In the 15 to 17 boys 50-meter breaststroke, White Meadow Lake's Andrew O'Neill lowered his own record to 33.32 seconds. Cedar Lakes Wendy Ferriero also broke her own record when she claimed the gold medal in the 9 & 10 girls 25-meter butterfly with a time of 16.04 seconds. Another White Meadow record-breaker was Kaitlyn Berman who set a new meet mark of 1:06.29 in the 12 & Under Girls 100-Meter Individual Medley. |
